New Account Setup

This document details the procedure for setting up a new IMAP email account in Microsoft Outlook 2003 with Sonic.net's recommended configuration. This is accomplished through the account setup wizard.


In Outlook 2003, click on the "tools" menu and select "E-mail Accounts..." Select "Add a new e-mail account" and click "next."

You will be prompted to specify the mail server type. Select IMAP and click "next."

You will be prompted to provide your account information. Your "Incoming mail server (IMAP) is imap.sonic.net, and your "Outgoing mail server (SMTP) is mail.sonic.net. You can access more account settings by clicking the "More Settings..." button.

Under the "Outgoing Server" tab, you can instruct Outlook 2003 to use authentication when sending email. Sonic.net requires that you enable SMTP authentication.

Under the "Advanced" tab, you can control the port and encryption settings for your account. Sonic.net requires setting your mail servers to use a secure connection (SSL). The Incoming server (IMAP) port number with SSL enabled is 993. The Outgoing Server (SMTP) port number with SSL enabled is 465.

After reviewing all of your settings, click "ok" to return to the email settings window. Click "next." Outlook 2003 will display a window indicating that you have completed the account setup process. Click "finish" to exit the new-account wizard.

Modify Existing Account

This document details the procedure for changing the IMAP settings in Microsoft Outlook 2003 for Sonic.net's recommended configuration.


In Outlook 2003, click on the "tools" menu and select "E-mail Accounts..." Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts" and click "next."

You will be presented with a listing of existing mail accounts. Select the one you would like to modify and click "Change..."

Your primary mail account settings are available here. Your "Incoming mail server (IMAP) is imap.sonic.net, and your "Outgoing mail server (SMTP) is mail.sonic.net.

You can access more account settings by clicking the "More Settings..." button.
