Outlook Express Setup

If you did not configure email as a part of the Internet Setup Wizard, you may need to configure Outlook Express manually to retreive your Sonic.net email.

Open Outlook Express.

First you will be prompted for your name. Uses spaces and capitalization as you please. Click "Next" to continue.

Enter your name

Now provide your email address. This will be your Sonic.net account name followed by "@sonic.net". Click "Next" to continue.

Outlook Express needs to know which mail servers to get mail from and to send mail through. The incoming mail server is a POP3 server, and its name is "pop.sonic.net". The outgoing mail (SMTP) server is named "mail.sonic.net". Click "Next" to continue.

Provide mail servers

To retreive mail from pop.sonic.net, Outlook Express will need your Account Name & Password. Please note that your Account Name is always in lowercase for this purpose, and that your password is case-sensitive. Select "Remember Password" to prevent having to type your password every time you check for new mail. Click "Next" to continue.

Once all of the above information has been provided, Outlook Express is ready to be your mail client. You can start using it immediately. Click "Finish" to start using Outlook Express.

Getting to your Mail Account Settings

Mail Account settings can be located in Outlook Express by opening the Tools menu and selecting "Accounts."

To view or change your Mail Account settings, select "pop.sonic.net" and click on the button labeled "Properties."

General Properties

Your general settings include your name, your organization name (if any), and your reply email address. Here you can also select whether this account will be included in a general "send and receive" action.

Your server settings include the incoming mail server name (pop.sonic.net), outgoing mail server name (mail.sonic.net), account name, and password.

  • By default, Outlook Express will use the same login name and password for outgoing mail as for incoming mail. You can change this by clicking the "Settings" button.

Connection Properties

You can specify a single connection for Outlook Express to use. This is not necessary.

The default Security settings can be changed as you please. These options can be used for encryption and message signing.

Advanced Properties

The outgoing mail (SMTP) server operates on port 465. The incoming mail (POP3) server operates on port 995. Sonic.net recommends the use of secure connections. Here you can optionally leave messages on the server.

Note: If you already have an IMAP account setup in Outlook Express please skip to step 18.


Click the "Tools" menu, the select "Accounts"

Select "Mail" tab, click "Add" and select "Mail."

Enter your name, click "Next"

Enter your sonic.net email address, click "Next"

Select "IMAP" from the drop down, then enter "imap.sonic.net" in the "Incoming Mail Server" box. Enter "mail.sonic.net" in the "Outgoing Mail Server" box, click "Next."

The "Account name" field should contain your sonic.net username, enter your sonic.net password in the "Password" field, click "Next."

When prompted to download folders folders click "Yes"

Click "OK" on the "plaintext authentication" error popup

Click "OK" on the "server has rejected your login" error

When prompted to confirm username and password click "Cancel"

Click "Cancel" on the "Show/Hide IMAP folders" window

Click on "Tools" and select "Accounts"

Click the "Mail" tab, Select "imap.sonic.net" from the list, then click "Properties."

Check the check box for "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" under "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)." Change the port number to 465. Check the check box for "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" under "Incoming Mail (IMAP)." Change the port number to 993, click "Apply" and click "OK."

When prompted to refresh your folder list click "Yes"

Check the boxes for the IMAP folder you want to sync to outlook, then click "OK"


Newsgroups

In addition to being a mail client, Outlook Express is a capable USENET news program as well.

First, load Outlook Express, then select Tools and Accounts

Tools -> Accounts

Click the button labeled "Add" and select "Mail..."

You will be prompted for your name. If you have already set up email in Outlook Express, it may already be present. Click "Next" to continue.

Enter your name

You will be prompted for your email address. Click "Next" to continue.

Enter your email address

Enter "news.sonic.net" as the news server name. Sonic.net news servers do not require you to log on when you are connected to the internet through Sonic.net. Click "Next" to continue.

Once the above information has been provided, click Finish to begin using newsgroups.

Click Finish to continue

You will be prompted to begin downloading newsgroups. Click "Yes" to begin.

click Yes It will take a few minutes for all of the newsgroups to be downloaded. There are over 36,000 newsgroups as of this writing.

Be patient, there are a lot of groups.

Once downloaded, you can begin subscribing to newsgroups. These are open forums, and you will not be notified when new posts are made, so check the newsgroups you are interested in often!

Subscribe to newsgroups

When you have subscribed to the newsgroups you are interested in, your groups will appear below your regular mail folders. Click on a group name to read its contents just like email.
